A receiving center is a 24/7 community center staffed by therapists, nursing staff and peer counselors to provide treatment for individuals in mental health or substance use crisis. Individuals are assessed, stabilized, and observed in a recliner for up to 23 hours. Most individuals are stabilized within these 23 hours and are then linked with a treatment program or long-term therapy services upon discharge. If an individual needs more than 23 hours to stabilize, there are stabilization beds available nearby for them to continue treatment. Caseworkers at the receiving center follow-up with clients for a couple months to make sure they are doing well and remove any barriers that prevent them from getting follow-up treatment.
What services do receiving centers offer?
Receiving centers offer mental health and substance use stabilization, therapy, and case management as needed. Participants can receive a suicide assessment, physical health screening, evaluations, detox services, peer services, medication management, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Once stabilized, individuals are linked to a treatment or therapy program in the community and discharged. It can be compared to an urgent care facility but for mental health and substance use services.
