UAC advocates for all of Utah’s 29 counties at the state and federal levels. The legislative process dramatically impacts county operations and funding. It is extremely important for the Utah Association of Counties to work closely with the Utah state legislature, state & federal agencies, cities & towns, and all others who influence policy in a way that affects how local governments operate and obtain critical funding.
Although the legislature meets for a brief 45-day session each January – March, it is a continual year long process that requires extensive research, monitoring, and constant communication with legislators. We work closely with our membership to draft legislation based upon resolutions or concepts our members believe will improve the county governance process. Our legislative team has spent years building vital relationships on behalf of counties and year after year we have a very high success rate of passing prioritized bills, obtaining substantial appropriations, and defeating harmful policy.
Our primary goals are to:
- Enhance county code.
- Safeguard our counties and their ability to self-govern.
- Obtain critical funding needed to perform state services on a local level.
UAC legislative advocacy is an essential service provided to our membership. Under the direction of our county elected officials, we determine policy positions and create resolutions which are passed by a majority vote of our membership. Below is more information explaining the process and an archive of past legislative work.
