Legislative Update for March 12th.

Everyone – the big news of the day is that there isn’t big news other than that we are waiting for the final budget to be released!  This afternoon, the leadership from both the House and Senate met at length and while there is an agreed upon budget, we won’t hear about it until Executive Appropriations Committee Meeting at 4:10 p.m., tomorrow March 13th.  They announced that there several ongoing items and programs funded by general fund dollars that will be funded with one-time monies to create a budget that will free up $300M to address the structural fund imbalance created by the tax shortcomings in the coming years.

The House and Senate will create a task force comprised of 10 members of the Senate and 10 members of the House to return to the Legislature in August address the structural imbalance in the budget (including sales tax reform).  This proposal provides an incentive to accomplish these goals so that ongoing funding needs can be addressed before they require additional funding.

So, today was a lot of “hurry up and wait” while we watched bills work through the process.  Both houses met until about 7:30 p.m. tonight so not quite as late as last night.  It will be late nights from here on out!  Keep in touch as we discuss our UAC funding priorities tomorrow.

Thank you
