Nominations for UAC Executive Committee leadership positions are open year-round, however to be considered for elections that take place at the Annual Convention in November, submissions must be made by 5 pm on July 31 each year. As we are approaching this deadline (two months) we want to make sure members are aware.
Qualifications are membership in the Utah Association of Counties and individuals must hold at least one elected county government office. To help achieve a balance of representation from among the membership, there is a rotation based on elected office and county size. As commissioners/council members are the largest affiliate organization with UAC, there is an alternating-year rotation between county commissioners/council members and all other affiliate offices (assessors, attorneys, auditors, clerks, recorders, sheriffs, surveyors, and treasurers). Likewise, large and small county population sizes are also alternated, large being represented as first and second class counties, and small being represented by third through sixth class counties.
To further diversify opportunities to serve, yet maintain continuity and service momentum, nominiations for positions are only accepted for second vice president and secretary. The second vice president position is a four-year commitment, moving up to first vice president, then president, and finishing with past president in the years that follow. Secretary is a one-year commitment, but has the added role of chairing the nomination committee to determine new nominations for the following year.
This year, UAC is seeking nominations for an “other affiliate” member from a large county to run for second vice president, and for a commissioner/council member from a large or small county to run for secretary.
If you are interested in serving as a member of the UAC executive committee, we would love to have you apply. If you know of someone who would be great, we encourage you to share this information with them so they apply. Submitted nominations will be presented to the UAC Nominations Committee following the July 31 deadline. The committee will review all applicants and submit a short list to the UAC Board of Directors for approval at their September 27 Board of Directors meeting. From there, approved applicants will be permitted to campaign for their position leading up to an official vote and winners announcement at the 2017 Annual Convention, November 15-17 in St. George.
