For my presidents message this month, I want to present a couple items. One is a resource I shared at Management Conference last week for my ongoing initiative on civility and the other is the introduction of an initiative to support Better Days 2020.
I am pleased to share with you civility calendars for May, June, and July. These simple daily challenges are not only a path to changing civility, they are ways we can make a difference in the lives of our families, friends, and community members. Review each calendar and imagine to yourselves, as I have, how amazing the world would be if everyone would take it upon themselves to do some of these acts of kindness and service! I know we are all busy but take just a moment and see what you can do TODAY to invite a higher level of civility into YOUR life.
Some of you witnessed the introduction of #flatmartha at the joint UAC/ULCT Women in Local Government breakfast at the Management Conference, but you’ll also start seeing her pop up on Facebook, Instagram, and other places. Inspired by the children’s book “Flat Stanley,” UAC has produced and distributed 30 #flatmarthas to different cities and counties to celebrate the placement of Martha Hughes Cannon’s statue in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the United States Capitol Building, and of the Better Days 2020 organization that seeks to explore the legacy of the past to “make Utah a better place for women in the future.”
The year 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of women’s right to vote in Utah, and in the modern nation. Similarly, it marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. I would love to see everyone sharing #flatmartha in their travels across the state and even abroad – planning and zoning meetings, service at your local food bank, visits to the capitol or other landmarks in Utah and other places. The Better Days 2020 message is important and this is a fun way to create connections with one another and citizens across the state.
If you would like your own #flatmartha reach out to me or UAC (801) 265-1331. Remember to hash-tag #flatmartha and tag me @Cindy White Bulloch, Iron County Assesor or @Cindy White Bulloch, @Utah Association of Counties and @betterdays2020 on facebook or, on Instagram, @cwbulloch and @utahs29 @betterdays2020 or twitter @cindy_bulloch so everyone can share in the fun!
