The UAC Clerks/Auditors Policy Committee met last week in preparation for the upcoming 2018 session. This year’s legislative agenda appears to have many bills affecting elections which the legislative team plans to track closely.
Issues covered in Thursday’s meeting included:
- Elections Equipment Funding will be a key area of focus. The Governor’s budget includes $4.5 million for new elections equipment. However, the Clerk’s request will be for $13 million to provide new elections equipment over the next 10 years. It has been 10 years since roughly $27 million was allocated for the equipment currently in use.
- Voter registration amendments, where individuals who apply to renew or obtain a new license or state ID will be registered to vote unless they choose to opt out. They have the opportunity to opt out twice, once at the DMV and again when they receive a mailer.
- Municipal Instant Runoff Voting or Ranked Choice Voting which is a pilot project that would be opt in for municipalities.
