There seems to be a new scam or way to rip people off every day, but this one in particular is worth mentioning to our members.
It’s called “Event Poaching” and targets conference attendees who make hotel arrangements for conferences. In a nutshell, a hotel booking firm (aka the poacher) will contact potential attendees of conferences to help them make reservations at nearby hotels at “discounted rates.” While the rates may appear appealing, they are basically rates offered through discount rate finders such as Expedia or Travelocity. Then to add insult to injury, they tag on their own hidden fees and exorbitant cancellation penalties.
It’s not as good a deal as it appears!
Two of the companies offering this “service” have recently contacted attendees of an Association of Government Risk Pools (AGRiP) Conference in the hopes of swaying them toward registering for lodging through them – they are Exhibitor Housing Management and Exhibition Housing.
Utah Association of Counties is unaware of any event poaching to our members for our conferences, however it’s something to be aware and on the look out for as members are frequently attending not only ours but other much larger events. If you are contacted by a poacher, please contact Doug Perry at UAC so we are aware of the incident(s) and can elevate efforts to notify members.
“Although poachers typically target larger events, at national hub venues, they can also disrupt local conferences,” according to a press release from AGRiP.
